True Review by Helen Lee, January 22, 2009
Let me get straight to the point. In my experience, relationships don’t always turn out the way you want them to. Two years ago, I was planning my wedding, but as fate would have it, I called it off three months before the big day.
As you might have guessed, I had not been out on a date since that time. Part of it had to do with my fear of getting hurt again, and the other part was because I needed to figure out what I really wanted out of life. I’m sure you can relate to what I was feeling.
Break-ups are hard to swallow, and after months of wallowing in self-pity, I decided to bite the bullet in jump on the bandwagon with other online daters.
Truth be told, I didn’t have the stomach for going out to clubs or bars, so after some research I decided to give True.com a try.
Now listen, despite what you may have heard, and no doubt about it, you’ve probably heard the worst of the worst about True.com. In fact, I took the time to read a lot of the reviews, mostly negative.
However, when I read the reviews about other dating sites, there would only be a few positive, mixed in with the mostly negative. So, whom do you believe?
For me, I decided to see for myself.
You see, Psychology Today endorses this site, so, it can’t be all bad. Right?
At first, I signed up for True.com’s free trial program. I quickly learned that all that glitters is not gold! Look, the membership is free, but to access all the features on the site, you will have to pay.
That didn’t scare me away though. Really, what in this world is truly “free?”
During the registration process, I completed my profile, agreed to Ture.com’s Code of Ethics, User Agreement, and took the TRUE Compatibility Test.
A word of caution: It is a requirement to complete all the steps above in order to access your account.
To get more bangs for my buck, I went ahead and signed up for the 30-day membership at $50 a month. There are several subscriptions offered – up to six months. But, I didn’t want to jump in with both feet, only to find out it wasn’t what it was cracked up to be.
During that time I received over 150 decent looking matches. Of those, I communicated with 20, and went out with 5. Those five were the ones who lived closest to my area.
And, honestly, True.com has been a wonderful tool for me. I’m excited about finding a relationship that will work for me. All in all, I’ve been able to manage it quite well, and I’ve had a lot of fun. No Mr. Right yet, but I’m enjoying looking!

I tried them all. Yes, you read that right. I tried and failed. But I refused to give up. I moved on to True.com – the “security guru” to online dating sites. And to be quite honest with you, the site is very intimidating.
No matter what, any online dating site is going to force you out of your comfort zone.
For one thing, at True.com you can become a member for free, but you won’t see any action until you upgrade, agree to their terms and conditions, complete a compatibility test, and oh yes, let’s not forget…submit to a criminal background check.
Seriously, I’m not kidding around. True.com checks to see if you have any felony arrests. And, on top of that, they also check to see if you are married.
And get this: Once you complete the compatibility test, you’ll discover some interesting things about yourself.
But, even better, the service will take a look at all of your answers and give you a list of possible matches. They will leave no stone unturned. You’ll be questioned about everything, from your racial preferences to whether or not children are important to you.
But, truth be told, no matter how many online dating sites I’ve tried, it still strikes me as strange to talk to someone that a computer has decided would be a good match.
You see, I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge, but I keep wondering just how far answering these multiple-choice questions will take me. Let me repeat…letting the computer choose the best match for me is still strange.
Ok, now you are probably asking what my matches were like. Some hit the nail on the head, while others got lost in the shuffle.
At first, all of my matches appeared to be “God Fearing” middle aged white men.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with religion or race (just for the record, I am an African American woman – and I’m 100 percent sure I identified my race). But, I’m open, and I didn’t give a racial or religious preference when those questions were asked.
And what’s more, I haven’t been to church in well over 5 years, even though I do consider myself Christian.
It struck me as weird that these men would be my match. It really made me think about the way I’d answered the questions. Maybe, just maybe, I don’t want what I THINK I want.
Oddly enough, I’m sticking with True.com. They made me reevaluate what I want and myself. And besides, I’ve really enjoyed my dates so far…and I never would have considered dating any of those men on my own.
Don’t miss boat; you may end up finding what you are looking for.
